Course manager Ray Goodsall
Ray Goodsall joined Canterbury Golf Club as course manager in June 2016, since when he has been at the forefront of numerous changes and improvements that have enhanced the reputation and status of the club.
He has been in golf greenkeeping all his working life, starting as a teenage apprentice at his home town club of Worthing before his career path took him to Hillbarn, Wentworth and Camberley Heath.
His first post as a head greenkeeper came at Golf Club Herford, in Germany, after which he spent four years at Upminster and then 13 years as course manager at Saffron Walden.
There he was inspirational in lifting the course from fourth to first place in the Top 100 Golf Courses in Cambridgeshire and he saw Saffron Walden chosen as a regular venue for county fixtures.
Ray has always held a deep appreciation of Colt courses: “Worthing, Wentworth and Camberley Heath are all quality courses," he says, "and I viewed Canterbury as being at least on a par with these but with a great deal of untapped potential."
A former marathon runner, Ray, who is married to Linda and has a daughter, Fiagbe, has an unusual hobby - sea fishing from a kayak. “That’s two sports in one,” he says. He also enjoys watching athletics, Formula 1 racing and snooker.
