The home pairing of David Elliott and Jack Barons braved the worst of the weather to finish clear winners of Canterbury’s Open Mixed Greensome on Saturday.

Elliott and Barons, receiving 15 strokes, made only one birdie – at the par-three second hole – but managed to avoid any disasters to amass 46 points, with halves of 24 and 22.

Three points behind them in second place were husband and wife Roger and Sheila Forster, from North Foreland, who won the visitors’ top prize of a Go Kart electric trolley each.

The Forsters, playing off a handicap of eight, had birdies at the first, third, eighth and 18^th holes but although they matched the Canterbury pair on the way out, they were three points short on the back nine.

Third of the 34 pairs, a point further back, were John Gawler and Moira Streatfield, who took the members’ runners-up prize, while West Kent’s Colin and Claire Moore scored 40 points for second place among the 21 visiting pairs.

Among the various other prizes was a nearest the pin at the eighth for the ladies that was won by Sidcup's Alison O'Neill and nearest the pin at the 17th for the men which went to David James, of Ashford.
